Meet the Riders

I conceived of the idea of Biking for Mammograms when I was thinking of something to do to mark the first anniversary of my mother's breast cancer diagnosis. Fortunately for her, she was getting regular screenings, and her cancer was detected relatively early. Following operation and treatment, it appears now that she's cancer-free. But it got me to thinking, what do women do who cannot afford mammograms - or don't have health insurance to pay for them? In my work as a journalist -- I host the National Public Radio program All Things Considered at WSHU in Fairfield, Connecticut -- I've learned that one of the greatest crises in our state is the number of people without health insurance. So I thought I'd combine my desire to do something about this problem, with a way to give back to the community for all the support it gave my mom during her breast cancer, and my love of cycling. It all came together as Biking for Mammograms -- an event that lots of people can participate in, whether they're bikers, donors, or fans.
